American rapper and songwriter Doechii is all over social media this week – from reaction to her jaw-dropping outfits at Paris Fashion Week and being announced for Glastonbury, to her quickly releasing a full version of a song called Anxiety that's gone viral and inspired a big dance trend on TikTok.
We've pulled together a Shooglebox showing reaction to Anxiety – and how people have been using it in TikTok videos.
There's a long and complicated story behind the song. Doechii first introduced fans to the song in the early days of the Covid pandemic when she posted a YouTube video performing it in her bedroom to an instrumental of Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye. A few years later the song was sampled by Jamaican rapper Sleepy Hallow, and it's only now that Doechii has released a full solo version of it.
Inspired by the "somebody's watching me" lyric, the dance involves dancing on your own before someone else appears in the background and joins in the routine. One of the biggest versions is from influencer couple Marco and Brooke Ashley Hall who've had more than 40 million views and six million likes on their TikTok:
The dance has been compared to a scene in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air – Will Smith has posted about how much he's enjoying the videos:
People are also doing videos in mirrors and using CapCut editing tools to create the illusion that they're watching themselves through the mirror:
When the song started going viral at the end of February, Doechii fans were hoping she'd release an official version of the song – and they're amazed at how quickly she's already been able to turn it around.
This fan says "We DEFINITELY made the right person famous":
Anxiety isn't the first Doechii song that's taken over social media – there was another big TikTok trend earlier this year inspired by Denial Is a River where thousands of people were trying to recreate the growl and breathing exercises that Doechii does on the track:
To top it all off, she won a Grammy Award last month for best rap album; has secured a spot as a Glastonbury headliner; and made her debut at Fashion Week in Paris where she was swarmed by a mob of fans.
